Terrorist attack at Boston Marathon
by on Monday, April 15, 2013  (10 comments)

I'm still catching up myself on what is going on in Boston right now. It appears two bombs detonated near the finish line. Initial pictures I've seen are not looking good. I won't post pictures here for those who don't want to see them. If you do want to see what seems to be the most commonly used photo, see the link below:

I'll update here as I'm able and as I get updates. Mixed messages now but it sounds like runners are being rerouted away from the finish line. If anyone has more details or finds updates before I post them, please don't hesitate to update in the comments. I'll be doing the same.

Hearing reports of a third device found. Appear to be confirmed but don't have anything hard yet.

Also hearing reports that it was possibly bombs dropped in garbage cans near the finish line.

Boston police are now reporting 2 dead, 22 injured.

Word is a third bomb blast occurred in the JFK library. Officials are also reporting finding 2 more bombs, I believe both in the finish line area. Unconfirmed reports of other bombs around the city. People in Boston are now being urged to stay away from landmarks.

All my friends from Wisconsin finished about 2 hours before the bombs went off. I would assume that they were away from the finish area.

At a press conference, it's being stated that no other devices have been found. There was a controlled explosion on Boylston St. of a bag left behind but it may not have been an explosive device. May have been a bag left by someone fleeing the area.

I know so many people who were there. Most have posted on Facebook/tweeted/emailed and I know are fine. There are a few still unaccounted for but, between still being on the course after and having finished earlier, I believe are ok. My main concern is for the families and friends of a couple of runners who were still out on the course during/after this.

It is surreal to see the runners running towards the finish line during the bombing. I imagine that there were still thousands of runners on the course.

Reports I saw suggested around 6,000 still on the course at that time. Looks like everyone I know and their loved ones are all safe.

I think of those who wait for us at the finish line. Those little boys and girls who wait all excited to see Mommy or Daddy finish the race; those spouses that keep those little children occupied til the end of the race, those who wait through all types of weather; those who got up early to drop us off at the starting line; those friends who stalked us throughout the entire race, those that shared our celebration of a PR for a day; those who want us to succeed just as badly as we want to; those parents that still come to proudly watch our race even though we are in our 30s or beyond, those who worry that we will fail and that we will be sad; those volunteers that make a race possible and all of those who give up so much and help so much so we can accomplish a very personal dream. Those husbands, wives, children, mothers, fathers, friends, brothers, sisters, strangers, and volunteers who are there to support us.

So very horrible to see those people so savagely attacked today.

Charlene, those are the same people I found myself thinking about, especially as I began to see what happened. The runners, even closest to the explosions, were relatively unaffected. The runner closest to the first explosion got knocked down but I heard he got back up and finished. The spectators, those family and friends waiting for their runners to finish, were the ones who took the brunt of the attack. Those are the most giving, selfless people there.

I'm actually changing what I'm going to blog about this week. I don't know if I'll have time to write today but I think we know what my topic is going to be this week.
